San Luis Valley · Colorado
Moffat is a tiny railroad town on the edge of the vast San Luis Valley, population under 200, sitting at 7,500 feet with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains filling the eastern horizon. People come here for two things: the valley's famous dark skies and the hot springs that bubble up along the valley's fault lines.
There are essentially no services in Moffat - stock up in Salida (45 minutes north) or Alamosa (40 minutes south). What you get is profound quiet, absurdly starry nights, and a front-row seat to one of Colorado's most mystical landscapes, from the Great Sand Dunes to the UFO Watchtower at Hooper.
