Private campsites & glamping in Florida

Florida is the only glamping state that never really closes. Ranked among the top camping states in the country, it runs a genuine year-round season — no winter shutdown, no snow season, no mud month — which makes its private stays some of the most bookable in America on short notice. The inventory is its own world: safari tents in live-oak hammocks, treehouses over spring-fed creeks, tiny cabins on the edge of the Everglades, RV resorts with park-model villages, and overwater-style stays in the Keys. Nothing here looks like the West, and that's the point.

The state breaks into four distinct glamping regions. The Florida Keys trade on tropical water — stilted cabins, waterfront tiny homes, and resort campgrounds where the sunset is the evening program. Ocala and Central Florida sit on the springs corridor: some of the clearest freshwater on the continent, with private treehouses and safari tents tucked into the oak canopy within an hour of Orlando. The Everglades and Southwest Florida offer the wildest stays — airboat country, Big Cypress edges, and glamping on working ranches where the wildlife viewing starts at the porch. The Panhandle and Northeast (St. Augustine, the Gulf coast) pair sugar-sand beaches with pine-forest campgrounds and historic-town access.

The booking logic here is inverted from the western states. Summer is the off-season — heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms thin the crowds and drop prices, and the private resorts run their deals. Winter is the high season, when snowbirds fill every RV resort from October through April and the Keys command peak rates; book winter holidays 3–6 months out. Hurricane season (June–November) is the real variable: reputable private resorts have clear weather policies and many offer rebooking rather than forfeiture, but always read the cancellation terms before committing in September.

The honest caveats are subtropical. Bugs are a fact of life — quality operators screen their tents and treat their grounds, but bring repellent regardless. Afternoon thunderstorms are a daily summer appointment; plan outdoor time for mornings. Alligators are genuinely present in freshwater anywhere in the state — don't swim in unmarked water, and keep dogs leashed near canals and ponds. And the springs deserve a special note: the water stays 72°F year-round, which feels perfect in August and bracing in January, and the clearest springs draw crowds by 10 a.m. — private stays near the springs buy you the early entry that day-trippers don't get.
