State guide

Private campsites & glamping in California

No state compresses more kinds of camping into one border. In a single long weekend you could sleep in a redwood grove on the Big Sur coast, a geodesic dome in the Mojave, a safari tent in wine country, and a yurt on Sierra granite — and every one of those nights could be on private land, booked without touching the state's reservation system.

That system is worth understanding, because it's the reason this directory exists. California's state parks book through ReserveCalifornia, which releases sites six months out — and the famous ones (coastal campgrounds, Big Basin's neighbors, the desert parks in wildflower years) vanish within minutes. Federal sites aren't easier. Private land sidesteps all of it: the redwood-grove glamping resorts of the Santa Cruz mountains and Big Sur, the dome villages of Wonder Valley with darker skies than the national park campgrounds, the Russian River safari tents where the swim beach is steps from your bed.

The regions each have their own logic. The Central and North Coasts (Big Sur, Mendocino) trade on fog, redwoods, and Highway 1 — check Caltrans for closures before you go, because landslides close the road most years. The High Desert (Joshua Tree, Wonder Valley, Twentynine Palms) is an October-to-April destination; summer regularly tops 100°F and the park campgrounds fill months ahead, which is exactly when the private domes and yurts ringing the park earn their keep. Wine Country (Sonoma, Healdsburg, Guerneville) pairs heated safari tents with tasting rooms and river swimming. The Sierra foothills and Nevada City offer Gold Country campgrounds an hour from Sacramento, and the South Coast (Santa Barbara) hides canyon eco-resorts between the mountains and the sea.

Two honest caveats travel with you everywhere in California. First, fire season — roughly August through November — can close forests, cancel trips, and fill the sky with smoke; have a backup plan and watch incident maps in late summer. Second, the microclimates: the coast can sit 30 degrees cooler than inland valleys ten miles away, and desert nights drop 40 degrees from the daytime high. Pack for two seasons. Private hosts, again, are the cheat code — they live in the microclimate, they'll tell you which weekend the fog burns off, and their cancellation policies are usually written by a human who has also watched a trip go sideways.
